Using historical and media images, Debby examines how she used her white-skewed belief system to interpret the world around her.
Socialized on a narrow worldview, Debby explores how she spent decades silently reaffirming harmful, archaic racial patterns instead of questioning the racial disparities and tensions she could see and feel. This workshop is designed to support white people in making the paradigm shift from ‘fixing’ and ‘helping’ those believed to be inferior, to focusing on internalized white superiority and its role in perpetuating racism at the individual, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural levels. This presentation includes pauses for reflection, dialog, and Q&A.

As we prepare for the upcoming year we want to encourage all educators to consider “What is Probable versus Possible” - what will happen if we continue on our current education trajectory - one that has not changed in over 100 years and what might be possible should we reimagine the purpose and structure of school.
The global pandemic and the conversation around racial reckoning have changed our understanding of education in our country, giving us a rare opportunity to deeply reflect on how we might shift schools to be more equitable, innovative, and enable students to be better prepared for the opportunities of the 21st century. Leveraging Transcend’s Leaps for Equitable 21st Century Learning, we will help educators to understand and identify the Leaps that will have the most transformational impact for their students and lead towards equitable and extraordinary outcomes in their next school year.

Dr. Love’s talk will discuss the struggles and the possibilities of committing ourselves to an abolitionist goal of educational freedom, as opposed to reform, and moving beyond what she calls the educational survival complex. Abolitionist Teaching is built on the creativity, imagination, boldness, ingenuity, and rebellious spirit and methods of abolitionists to demand and fight for an educational system where all students are thriving, not simply surviving.

While the pandemic was a disruption to schooling as we know it, the challenges and triumphs of distance learning have provided us great opportunity to improve how we educate our students. During our session we will focus on the upcoming year – what schools are prepared to do well, challenges schools may face and what supports will be needed to remove those challenges. Participants will be engaged in discussion and idea sharing.

It is time to put your reflections and insights from the Leaping Forward to the New School Year into action!
We will use this time together to shift from the theoretical to the practical. You and your fellow educators will work independently and in small groups to consider how you will take steps to advance the Leap(s) in your unique learning environment. You will have the opportunity to internalize your role in advancing the Leap(s) and be given an opportunity to workshop your action steps with a group of your peers.

Equitable school districts commit to giving every student what they need to participate fully in all available student opportunities. The focus of equity work must be to remove the barriers that limit full participation in these opportunities. This session will explain how to structure and implement an effective equity audit to uncover these barriers. The word “audit” may bring to mind a bit of fear and some trepidation. An equity audit is not a “gotcha” moment; it is a learning journey. The equity audit process is one of introspection, reflection, collaboration, and dialogue that is inclusive of the entire school community.
